Spring is officially here...

That's right! No disrespect to any of the Chiffchaffs which have been blurting out their familiar two-syllable tunes over on Wanstead Flats for the last week, but seeing a nailed-on proper migrant in the form of two Sand Martins fly over Alexandra Lake and then continue there journey west along the Flats, finally heralded the end of a long wet winter and the official start of spring migration for me - there's nothing better than seeing your first returning summer migrants of the year - this definitely lifts your spirits and puts a little extra spring in your step.

On a chilly morning, spent mostly standing around chewing the fat with usual Wanstead Collective, there wasn't a lot else to be seen, Meadow Pipits and Skylarks were in full voice around us as we discussed the weeks news topics (hoax birds, missing aeroplanes and oblivious dog-walkers), between conversations someone did occasional raise a pair of bins to look for the first returning Northern Wheatears, but no sign of any of those white-rumps as yet...any day now!
